BET Orders Comedy Series ‘Twenties’ From Lena Waithe

Shortly following the second season pickup of Lena Waithe’s Boomerang reboot, BET has ordered yet another series, Twenties, from the Award-winning screenwriter. Waithe, who said she wants to change the face of BET “by being phenomenal,” is surely making her mark on the network and beyond.

Created by Waithe back when she was in her early twenties, the series follows the lives of Hattie, a queer black girl, and her two straight best friends, Marie and Nia. The single-camera scripted show deals with love, friendship, and learning to cope with life as a young adult. Waithe will executive produce alongside Susan Fales-Hill, Rishi Rajani, and Andrew Coles.

“BET Networks is thrilled to partner once again with the creative visionary Lena Waithe on both Boomerang and Twenties as she is without a doubt a leading relevant voice of our generation and a disruptor in her own right,” BET’s Connie Orlando told Deadline.

“Twenties has been a project I’ve been dreaming about for as long as I can remember. I think a lot of people were interested but didn’t see the vision. I’m so grateful Scott Mills and Connie Orlando did. I couldn’t be more excited to deepen my relationship with BET. I know audiences have been waiting a long time for this one,” said Waithe.

Outside of her projects on BET, Laithe’s popular Showtime drama series The Chi is now in its second season. Her upcoming works include Amazon’s Them, a horror anthology series, the drama film Queen & Slim, and HBO’s Untitled Kid Fury Project.
