‘Black Candle Women’: Diana Marie Brown’s Novel Is Receiving A TV Series Adaptation

Universal Television has teamed up with Jenna Bush Hager’s production company, Thousand Voices, to develop a TV series based on Diane Marie Brown’s debut novel “Black Candle Women”. Hager, who has a first-look deal with Universal Studio Group, is collaborating with Carla Banks Waddles, the showrunner of “Bel-Air”, and Jenna Bans, the creator of “Good Girls”, both of whom have overall deals with UTV, for the project.

“Black Candle Women” delves into the lives of four generations of Montrose women – Augusta, Victoria, and Willow – who reside in a secluded bungalow in California. Bound by their shared collection of secret tinctures and spells, they rarely venture outside until seventeen-year-old Nickie Montrose brings home a boy, unraveling a long-held family curse that puts their family and Nickie’s relationship in jeopardy.

Waddles will take on the role of writer and executive producer for the adaptation, while Bans will executive produce through her production company Minnesota Logging Company, along with Casey Kyber, the Head of Television for the company. Hager and Ben Spector, the President of Thousand Voices, will also serve as executive producers.

Brown expressed her excitement to Deadline, stating, “I am thrilled that my book will not only be adapted but also be in such incredibly talented hands. I’m so excited to see these characters that have lived in my head for so long brought to life on screen.”

Hager shared her enthusiasm as well, saying, “Diane’s magical, poetic novel captured my imagination from the first page. I am thrilled to partner with the indomitable Carla to bring the four generations of Montrose women to viewers. We are also thrilled that Jenna and Casey have joined us alongside our partners at UTV.”
