Get Ready For The Long-Awaited ‘Girlfriends’ Reunion On ‘black-ish’
It’s been eleven years since the end of the popular sitcom Girlfriends, but the lovable cast is finally reuniting in the sixth season of black-ish.
On Thursday, September 12th, Tracee Ellis Ross excitedly announced on Instagram the reunion news that we’ve all been waiting for. “So we have an extra special episode of black-ish. It’s a feminist episode, so I brought in some back-up from some of my girlfriends,” she said as she revealed her former Girlfriends co-stars, all appearing to be equally as enthusiastic about reuniting.
Golden Brooks, Persia White, and Jill Marie Jones will join Ross on a black-ish episode titled “Feminisn’t.” Premiering on October 8th, here is the official synopsis according to ABC:
“When Bow [Ross] learns that Diane [Marsai Martin] and Ruby [Jenifer Lewis] don’t believe in feminism, she brings Diane to meet the women in her feminist group. Bow’s friend Abby [guest star Nadia Quinn] thinks the group needs to be more inclusive, so Bow invites three of her girlfriends to join. Meanwhile, Junior [Marcus Scribner] and Jack [Miles Brown] help Dre [Anthony Anderson] after he realizes he is out of touch with modern day feminism.”
Girlfriends is widely recognized as one of the most prominent television shows, as it depicted blackness and the diversity of Black women in multiple ways.
“The timing was perfect to be able to bring Girlfriends to a whole new audience. We haven’t all been together on camera since 2006,” Ross told Entertainment Weekly in an exclusive interview.
“Girlfriends ran for eight years and was important to so many people. Being able to merge the worlds of black-ish and Girlfriends was surreal for me — and so much fun. These are women I grew up with and love deeply and it was easy to tap back into the magic of our chemistry and how much we love each other. It was giggles on top of giggles on top of giggles.”
Season 6 of black-ish premieres September 24th at 9:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
