Issa Rae Shares Her Thoughts About The Final Season Of ‘Insecure,’ And What’s Next On The Horizon

With the final season of Insecure approaching, fans have been hoping for a spinoff series in the future. While nothing has been set in stone, Issa Rae revealed to ET in an interview that there’s certainly a possibility that season five won’t be the last time that we’ll see the cast that we’ve grown so attached to throughout the years. 

However, even if a spinoff fails to occur, Rae confirmed that the last season will have more than the usual eight episodes, so we’ll be able to cherish the show for a bit longer. Due to the pandemic which has caused multiple false starts and obstacles, filming is still in progress. “When people ask if shooting the season is bittersweet, I say it’s mostly sweet and the only bitter part is the fact that COVID is in place because it just doesn’t allow us to fully immerse ourselves in the experience and each other and you know, properly saying goodbye,” said Rae. 

Rae has been preparing to say goodbye since the third season. “I’ve been wrapping my head around this since, candidly, season 3,” she said. “But I’m so grateful to be able to play this character, who is obviously a version of me, and in the same way that I want this character to grow, I want to be able to grow too. So I think that’s what comes with it — I’ve played her for a long time, and I have so much more that I want to do.”

In regards to what’s in store for the final season, Rae wouldn’t reveal any details, but she expressed her satisfaction with the conclusion of the show. While pleasing everyone isn’t realistic, she’s hopeful that most fans will also share her sentiments about the ending. 

As Insecure wraps up, Rae feels “over the moon with potential” as she steps into the future. She has signed a five-year deal with WarnerMedia, which opens the doors for incredible opportunities.  For one of the first projects, she’s landed an eight-episode order by HBO Max for her upcoming comedy titled Rap Sh*t, which will follow two former high school friends from Miami who reunite to form a rap group together. “It feels so good to be able to have the trust of Warner and HBO, the HBO family, and their properties, to give us free rein like that,” she exclaimed.
