‘Men of Change’: Opening Exhibit at the International African American Museum Highlights Exceptional Black Men Of The Past And Present

At the newly opened International African American Museum in Charleston, South Carolina, the exhibition Men of Change: Power. Triumph. Truth. is a poignant representation of the Black men who are often not acknowledged in society.

Blending literature, history, poetry, original artwork, and compelling photographs, Men of Change makes room for introspection and reflective conversations. A careful weaving of the past and present highlights the everlasting importance of these men within the tapestry of dynamic community traditions.

Men of Change celebrates influential men including Muhammad Ali, James Baldwin, Ta-Nehisi Coates, W.E.B Du Bois, and Kendrick Lamar. These exceptional men have indelibly shaped the history and culture of the nation, whether through their contributions to politics, sports, science, entertainment, business, or religion. Their accomplishments are situated within the deep legacy and traditions of the Black experience, highlighting their unwavering excellence in the face of adversity and societal barriers. 

The exhibition encourages visitors to confront prevailing narratives about Black men and examine authentic stories. Twenty-five contemporary artists were also given the opportunity to honor and contemplate the groundbreaking achievements of these men through their personal creative lenses. Their artwork serves as arresting counterpoints to the backlit photographs and inspirational quotes, collectively honoring the truth of the Black experience.  

Scholars, writers, and cultural influencers curated this leading-edge exhibition, carefully selecting the men and their stories. Men of Change is on display until August 6th, 2023. It is currently on a national tour, made possible by Ford Motor Company Fund.
