Oscar Noms 2019: ‘Black Panther’ Makes History, Spike Lee Scores First Best Director And Best Picture Nomination, And More
The nominees for the 91st Academy Awards were unveiled Tuesday morning, and there’s quite a few historical breakthroughs for Black talent this year. While there were also a good deal of disappointments (such as no Oscar nods for women directors), we’re celebrating the fact that Black Panther alone scored seven Oscar nominations – a strong contrast to the film’s three Golden Globe nominations and zero wins.
As the first-ever superhero film to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, this is a historical moment for Black Panther. It’s competing in the Best Picture category with BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star Is Born, and Vice.
Furthermore, today was also a groundbreaking moment for Hannah Beachler, the set designer of Black Panther’s mesmerizing fictional world Wakanda. Rightfully so, Beachler just became the first African-American to be nominated for an Oscar in production design. Ruth Carter, the Award-winning costume designer behind high-profile films such as Selma, Do the Right Thing, and Malcolm X, also earned an Oscar nod for Best Costume Design in Black Panther.
After over 30 years of filmmaking, Spike Lee has finally earned a Best Director and Best Picture nomination with BlacKkKlansman. This adds Lee to an exclusive club, as he is only the sixth Black filmmaker to be Oscar-nominated for directing, joining John Singleton, Lee Daniels, Steve McQueen, Barry Jenkins, and Jordan Peele.
While Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk was snubbed for Best Picture, Jenkins did earn a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, and Regina King scored her first nomination for Best Supporting Actress in the film. Peter Ramsey’s Spider Man: Into the Spider-Verse earned an Oscar nod for Best Animated Picture, and a win would be both historical and a monumental step forward for Black directors in animation.
In another historic win, producer Gabriela Rodriguez became the first Hispanic woman to be nominated for Best Picture with Roma. This is also the first Netflix movie to receive a Best Picture nomination.
