‘The Boondocks’ Revival Is Coming To HBO Max In 2020

For months, there has been plenty of speculation surrounding the reboot of the esteemed animated series The Boondocks. Now, it’s officially returning–and a date has been set. HBO Max has ordered 24 episodes of the new Boondocks, divided into two seasons. 

Aaron McGruder, the creator of the series, will return as the showrunner, and will executive produce along with Norm Aladjem, Seung Kim, and Meghann Collins Robertson. Sony Pictures Animation will produce as well.  

Deadline reports that the new Boondocks “follows the adventures of self-proclaimed “Civil Rights Legend” Robert “Granddad” Freeman, and his two rambunctious grandsons Huey and Riley. The family has recently moved to an idyllic community in suburban Maryland only to see it taken over by the tyrannical Uncle Ruckus and his bizarre neo-fascist regime. Life under Ruckus turns out to be an everyday struggle to survive.”

The first season of The Boondocks premiered in 2005 and ran through 2014. “There’s a unique opportunity to revisit the world of The Boondocks and do it over again for today,” McGruder told Deadline. “It’s crazy how different the times we live in are now—both politically and culturally—more than a decade past the original series and two decades past the original newspaper comic. There’s a lot to say and it should be fun.”

The re-imagined Boondocks is set to launch on HBO Max in fall 2020 with a 50-minute special. The entire four seasons of the original Boondocks series will also be available to stream.
