Watch The Official Trailer For HBO’s New Provocative Series ‘I May Destroy You’

After much anticipation, the first full trailer for HBO/BBC One’s I May Destroy You has been released. Created by and starring Michaela Coel (Chewing Gum), the upcoming half-hour series explores the nature of sexual consent in the modern age of dating and relationships. 

The official synopsis reads: “Set in London, where gratification is only an app away, the story centers on Arabella (Coel), a carefree, self-assured Londoner with a group of great friends, a boyfriend in Italy, and a burgeoning writing career. But when her drink is spiked, she must question and rebuild every element of her life.” 

Described as “fearless, frank, and provocative,” I May Destroy You is birthed during the era of #MeToo, as women courageously take their power back. Yet the trailer reveals that the series is layered and won’t be completely somber. There is certainly playfulness and charm present, too, which is only natural when it comes to projects created by Coel. Furthermore, one can’t help but notice the aesthetically pleasing cinematography, which is slightly reminiscent of the Award-winning HBO series Euphoria. 

In addition to Coel, Weruche Opia and Paapa Essiedu star as Arabella’s best mates Terry Pratchard and Kwame Acheamong. Other cast members include Samson Ajewole, Harriet Webb, Karan Gill, Natalie Walter Ellie James and Franc Ashman.

The first season will feature 12 episodes, and it set to debut on HBO on Sunday, June 7 at 10:30 p.m. EST.
